President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) was launched in 2003 to combat global HIV/AIDS. It is the largest commitment made so far by any nation to combat a single disease in history.

Currently present in 20 countries, PEPFAR is working with host countries to provide treatment, prevention and care for people living with HIV/AIDS and training health care providers.

The ACTION-PlusUp Project

ACTION-PlusUp is an IHVN Project funded by the US Government PEPFAR (US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) through Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). ACTION-PlusUp is a follow-on grant to ACTION Plus which provides continuity for AIDS Care and Treatment in Nigeria (ACTION) Project implemented by the University of Maryland's Institute of Human Virology, Baltimore in partnership with IHVN. This Institute's capacity as local organization was built during the 6-year implementation period of the ACTION Project. ACTION-PlusUp focuses on the following areas: ART Treatment for Adult and Children (including pregnant women); lab diagnosis and tracking of patients status; care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS and people affected by HIV/AIDS; and Monitoring and Evaluation of patients and program progress. Others include Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT); HIV Counseling and Testing; Support to Orphans and Vulnerable Children; and Training in all the above areas.

IHVN ACTION Plus goals for Nigeria by the end of COP 2012 include:

• Treat additional 33,048 adults and children across 26 states in Nigeria, and continue to provide ART to 92314 adults and children.
• Continue to provide clinical services (pain assessment and management, laboratory, OI prophylaxis/management, nutritional assessment/therapy) to 184,628 individuals
• Provide Umbrella Care to 514160and affected individuals
• Provide theraputic/supplementary nutritional support to 923 malnourished individual
• Provide 315,715 pregnant women with PMTCT counseling and testing and results and 9,307 HIV+ pregnant women with ARV prophylaxis
• Provide prevention messages on A/AB to 33,807 people and 108,192 most at risk populations
• Provide 5,539 TB/ HIV co-infected clients with TB treatment
• Provide laboratory services at 136 individual points of service using a network model to provide appropriate lab capacity and patient support at comprehensive sites as well as HCT stand alone and DOTS sites
• Provide support services to 85,729 orphans and vulnerable children including adolescent in 23 states of Nigeria
• Support HIV counseling and testing (HCT) for 531,596 clients.

ACTION-PlusUp focuses on the following areas:

IHVN ACTION Results

As of February 28th 2013, 233,517 patients received care and support for HIV/AIDS, and 156,727 received ARV drugs and treatment on the Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief in the treatment sites that IHVN supports in Nigeria.
