The Strategic Information (SI) Department of IHVN is responsible for managing the documentation, analysis, reporting, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information to help in strategic decision making that will improve the inputs, processes, outputs and impact of IHVN's programs with a strong emphasis on quality assurance. It comprises of three sub-units: Program Monitoring and Reporting, Data Management and Health Management Information Systems (HMIS).

The success of any health program or initiative is highly dependent on a good monitoring & evaluation system which adequately captures data on all the activities and achievements of the program. The Program Monitoring and Reporting Unit routinely oversees the collection and collation of program level data from all IHVN supported health facilities for monitoring the progress of program implementation at these facilities. The data collated is used to generate program level indicator reports for the Government of Nigeria, the funding agencies and the Institute on a monthly, quarterly and yearly basis. These reports are used to inform program implementation decisions and show the success of our various implementation strategies.

This unit is also responsible for developing, modifying and deploying Data Collection Tools (DCT) in line with the national reporting system. Trainings, site activations, and providing program monitoring related technical assistance to the facilities and the Government of Nigeria also fall under the deliverables of this unit.

The Data Management unit is responsible for analysing, interpreting and summarizing program and patient level data; design and development of tools and methods for assessments, and evaluation of different program areas and managing all databases generated within the organization. Results of assessments/analysis are disseminated toall relevant stakeholders for continuous improvements at program and patient levels.

The Data Management unit is also responsible for ensuring the quality of program and patient level data (HIV/AIDS and EID) collected at all IHVN supported sites; and carries out monthly, quarterly and bi-annual data quality assessments centrally and at the site level.

The Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) unit is responsible for implementing and maintaining all information management systems within the organization. IHVN currently has systems in place that manage both patient and program level data.

The electronic Patient Management and Monitoring system being used by the Institute is the Open Medical Record System (OpenMRS) software designed to capture longitudinal data on patient's clinical encounters within the different service delivery points. The unit is also responsible for implementing and maintaining DHIS 2.0 web-based platform which is a software used to collect and collate aggregate program level data for reporting. The other activities of the unit include providing technical support and trainings on all the various platforms being implemented, system design and implementation.

Currently running projects and pilots include:

The OpenMRS – DHIS 2.0 connecting module/interface: This module will allow seamless connection/communication between OpenMRS and DHIS 2.0. Summary data can then be transferred from the OpenMRS into the DHIS 2.0 instance for easy reporting.

Teleform Abstraction: The Teleform Software is a document management system which captures patients' information on a one pager abstraction form that contains relevant patient information and used for reporting purposes.
