The Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) has launched an electronic health record system for more than 4000 People Living with HIV accessing treatment in Asokoro District Hospital, Abuja. The health record system ensures that information of patients currently receiving care and treatment in the hospital are moved from manual to electronic systems and accessed real-time by health care providers when a patient visits.

The Chief Medical Director of Asokoro District Hospital, Dr. Uche Afioma, who was represented at the launch by the Head Clinical Services, Dr. Chidi Nnabuchi, at the launch, said that he was pleased with the electronic system as it would improve confidentiality. “It eliminates the issue of stigmatization. Prior to this time, every other patient had been captured electronically except HIV positive patients. That sets them apart from other patients. With this transition, everybody is now on the electronic system and nobody can be identified as HIV positive.”

Dr. Nnabuchi also stated that the standardized questions on the new system will support health care providers to give the expected quality care to patients.

A volunteer at the ART clinic Mr. Micheal Terngu said that the system has shortened work load for staff and reduced waiting time for patients. “Sometimes, we see up to 150 patients in a day. This reduces the time spent in removing folders and we have had less complains.” A male client who regularly accesses treatment at the clinic said he has spent less time due to the use of the system. “Before, by 12pm we’ll still be in the hospital but today, I finished before that time.”

IHVN has also launched real-time clinical documentation for patients in National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) Idu, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH) Gwagwalada, DalhatuAraf Specialist Hospital (DASH) Lafia and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) Kano. The system is to be launched in three more hospitals this year.
