HIV Testing/Blood Safety Unit

BACKGROUND

The IHVN ACTION project, in its efforts to provide treatment, care, support and prevention for people infected and affected with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria, started Blood Safety activities in 2005. These activities were facilitated through provision of laboratory equipment, consumables and supplies to ensure that all blood units for emergency transfusion were screened for HIV in all IHVN supported sites by this unit head by Mr. Abubakar Abdullahi. In addition, the unit provides supportive supervision and under the the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS)-Hospital linkage program, promotes development of voluntary donor recruitment, blood screening, and utilization of screened blood from NBTS Zonal Centers in accordance with the Nigerian National Blood Transfusion Policy/Guidelines.


ACHIEVEMENTS

HIV rapid antibody testing for HIV diagnosis in individuals is provided at tertiary, secondary and primary health care facilities supported by IHVN for HTC, PMTCT, HIV/TB and clinical diagnostic services. The Unit provides supportive supervision to ensure that good laboratory practices in HIV. as well as Syphilis, Hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C virus, Cryptococcus antigen, and other serological testing are entrenched and reliable results are produced. It liaises with other units and departments within the organization such as Clinical and Community Health Departments for oversight in ensuring that these services are rendered effectively. This also includes the Strategic Information Department for data collation, Training Unit to fill gaps identified in testing, Commodity Unit for steady supply of consumables and the Laboratory Quality Improvement Unit for quality assurance. The Unit also oversees the Mobile Laboratory services, in which five mobile lab vans, located in the five regional offices provide high quality laboratory services. The mobile laboratory is a van designed and configured with equipment to serve as a laboratory and used to provide an array of laboratory tests on a mobile platform. It caters for facilities without capacity to provide laboratory services. The inside of the mobile laboratory van is arranged into units; CD4, Chemistry, Haematology, Serology, TB smear microscopy and Malaria diagnosis. Partec Cyflow equipment is installed for CD4, Reflotron for Chemistry, Sysmex KX 21 for Haematology, iLED microscope for TB smear microscopy.
