MNCH/PMTCT Unit

Unit Head
Edwina Mang
JP, BSN Admin, MEM

The Maternal, Newborn and Child/Prevention of Maternal-to-Child Transmission of HIV Unit (MNCH/PMTCT Unit) of the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) exists to support the Government and people of Nigeria to reduce the burden of maternal to child transmission of HIV, pediatric HIV and enhance safe motherhood. The unit has been able to expand MNCH/PMTCT services to health facilities and their adjoining communities in Nassarawa, Benue, Delta, Kano, Katsina, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo states and the FCT, targeting pregnant women and their families.

The Unit through IHVN-supported health facilities has ensured effective facility and community-based MNCH/PMTCT services which include HIV counseling and testing, partner counseling and testing and related laboratory services. Also, antiretroviral drugs for HIV positive mothers and their exposed babies, support services and basic care packages are provided in facilities. Mothers and children also benefit from early infant diagnosis services for exposed babies, linkages of HIV positive mothers and exposed babies to care services (meant for orphans and vulnerable children), referral and sexual and reproductive health services and family planning.

As part of its Safe Motherhood Initiatives, the Institute has supported the community-drive for MCH service uptake and enhancement of community obstetric services through developing the capacity for and ensuring appropriate referral of pregnant women through the traditional birth attendant system to needed care and services by skilled health care providers. The Unit collaborates with the Institute's Pediatric Unit to ensure the provision of point-of-service Provider Initiated Testing and Counseling for pediatric population through facility-based child welfare points of service.

The Unit has also strengthened supported facilities to ensure the sustenance of quality service and care provision, and linkage between facilities departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pediatric to ensure the continuum of care along the MNCH/PMTCT Cascade of HIV positive mothers and their exposed babies to ensure their accountability and retention in care.

The Unit supports the Government of Nigeria to adapt and adopt WHO PMTCT guidelines and collaborates with the Federal Ministry of Health, relevant United States Government and UN agencies in their respective in-country implementation of MNCH/PMTCT and Safe Motherhood programs.

The MNCH/PMTCT Unit is in the forefront of ensuring integration of comprehensive MNCH/PMTCT services at all supported sites through advocacy to stakeholders and site management, as well as communities in the spirit of promoting ownership and sustainability.

From the commencement of its program in Nigeria in 2004 to September 2013, IHVN has through its two main PMTCT programs, ACTION, now ACTIONPlus Up and ACTION in Community (AIC), provided HIV Testing and Counseling to 1,574,074 pregnant women and antiretroviral drugs to 44,038 to identified HIV positive pregnant women to prevent maternal-to-child transmission of HIV.

The MNCH/PMTCT unit is headed by an Associate Director working with a central office-based MNCH/PMTCT team in conjunction with the regional and state level MNCH/PMTCT program staff across the 10 states in the country.
