The Honorable Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole has said that the National Reference Laboratory in the National TB and Leprosy Training Center, (NTBLTC) will be quickly rebuilt to aid diagnosis of tuberculosis and drug-resistant tuberculosis.

Prof. Adewole, who said this while visiting the laboratory that was gutted by fire March this year, noted that assistance from non-governmental organizations such as the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) with financial support from the Global Fund to Fight HIV, TB and Malaria, would be needed to make this happen.

The Minister toured the laboratory with the IHVN Chief Operating Officer/Managing Director, Mr. Charles Mensah, the IHVN Zaria State Manager, Mr. Meshak Panwal, the National Coordinator of the National TB, Leprosy and Buruli Ulcer Control Program, Dr. Adebola Lawanson, the Principal of the Center, Mr. Labaran Shehu, and other dignitaries.

imagesProf. Adewole stressed the importance that the president places on the fight against TB and insisted that “TB is a coward. It’s beatable, treatable and can be defeated.”

Earlier, IHVN COO, Mr. Charles Mensah praised the collaboration between NTBLTC Zaria, Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria and the Institute which allowed for smooth functioning of the reference laboratory and the National External Quality Assessment Laboratory. He said that though it seemed impossible, IHVN founder, Dr. William Blattner’s visionary leadership led to the investment of a multi- million naira 90 KVA battery and inverter house that serve as back up to the two (2) 100KVA generators for constant power supply to the laboratories.
