Success Stories – Joy Nufi

imagesJoy helps women in Progressive Support Group, a mother-to-mother support group of over 170 members in Mararaba. She says that the group helped her realized that people can live positively with HIV. It is this assurance that she passes on to women who are pregnant and are living with HIV.

She also shares her experience of living in denial of her HIV status after discovering it in 2002. "I stopped attending antenatal and sought the services of a traditional birth attendant. I refused to go back to the hospital because I looked healthy and strong. I gave birth to a baby boy; he turned out to be positive and died two years later due to HIV complications," she says.

Today, Joy has a baby without HIV because she accessed PMTCT services at IHVN supported Federal Medical Center in Mararaba Gurku, Nasarawa State of Nigeria. "IHVN has been very good to us and mothers in my condition," she says.
