imagesThe International Research Center of Excellence (IRCE) is a center of excellence established in 2015 by the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) to promote public/private partnership for quality health services, capacity building and research in West Africa. This is one of the major fulcrums of the vision of IHVN which was established as a local non-government and not-for-profit organization, to bring quality health services within the reach of millions of Nigerians.

With the establishment of IRCE, the Institute sees a future in which scientists are nurtured and provided world class infrastructure to research collaboratively on diseases of relevance to the local community such as HIV, TB, malaria, cancer, non-communicable diseases and emerging infectious diseases.

The center, which is located along airport road in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja, will be a combination of laboratories, offices, training facilities, and lecture auditoriums on 2.5 hectares of land that IHVN has acquired and fenced. It is estimated to cost N5 billion, and will contribute immensely to the sustainability of the HIV, TB, malaria, cancer, other diseases and programs in Nigeria.

Initially established in 2004 to address the HIV/AIDS crisis through development of infrastructure for treatment, care, prevention and support for people living with HIV/AIDS, IHVN has had tremendous success in its operations and therefore seeks to continue to fight infectious and non-infectious diseases in Nigeria through this expansion. IHVN will use its 11 years of existence and partnerships to work with government, academia, interested individuals, and corporate organizations locally and internationally to fund the building of this center.

This center, which is under the leadership of Professor Alash'le G. Abimiku, a distinguished scientist herself, will create an enabling environment for creative thinking and innovation in science to address Nigeria's and global health priorities. It will provide a common world class platform for the implementation of research and clinical trials at international standards at IHVN as part of global networks, and foster collaborations and synergism between Nigeria's finest researchers and their counterparts at international research institutions and universities. Importantly, this center will provide opportunities for young Nigerian researchers to develop and execute research projects.

Established in 1998, the University of Maryland, Institute of Human Virology has joined with the National Institute of Health, Fogarty International Center and key academic and research institutions to build international HIV/ AIDS research training capacity. Since 2004, the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria has been a key collaborator in Nigeria. For more information, please visit:
