Unit Head
Dr. Oluokun Oluyomi Young

As a sub-unit of the clinical services department, the Adult ART unit supports the Government of Nigeria (GoN) in provision of clinical services to adult people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Nassarawa, Benue, Kano, Katsina, Adamawa, Bauchi, Ogun, Plateau, Taraba states and the Federal Capital Territory. The services include baseline assessment, initiation and monitoring of ART, prevention and management of opportunistic infections and other co-morbidities and appropriate referrals when required.

The unit ensures the dissemination, deployment and implementation of national HIV/AIDS policies, strategies and plans while supporting the GoN to ensure the achievement of UNAIDS 95-95-95 goal by 2030. Working through supported facilities, the unit has improved access to treatment for adults living with HIV and ensured successful implementation of the test and start policy in nine priority LGAs in 2016 and with plans to scale up to all supported states in line with the current national guideline and the UNAIDs 2nd 90 goal. Quality and continuum of care is closely monitored to ensure all PLHIVs receive treatment in line with national standard of care.

As of March 2019, 385 facilities were programmatically and technically supported to provide good quality care and treatment to PLHIVs. The capacity of over 500 health workers were built to ensure PLHIVs on ART are appropriately managed and monitored to achieve durable and sustained viral suppression in line with the UNAIDs 3rd 95 goal.
